Miracle Stories

Miracles happen with the help of volunteers at the St. Andrew's Crippled Children Clinic. Sometimes the miracle is helping a child walk for the first time. Sometimes it's teaching parents how to feed a child who has difficulty swallowing. Sometimes it's the miracle of hearing for the first time. Read on to learn about some of the miracles we see at each Clinic.

They are not hearing impaired. In fact, Estefania sometimes interprets for her brother. Speech pathologists at the Clinic are working with Jesus to help him develop oral communication skills. Lupita Montes

Crippled Children
She is 4 years and from Nogales, Mexico. She is a double-amputee. Her feet were so disfigured that she would never walk. At age 2, she went to Shriners Hospital for amputation. She returns to the Clinic regularly for check ups and to have her prostheses adjusted. When she got her first prostheses, she would not walk with them. After 3 days, we called in our special therapist-a golden retriever who licked her face and left the room. Lupita took off chasing the dog and has not stopped running since!

Maria Robles

Mara Robles, from Nogales, Mexico, is 8 years old. She has "brittle bones" disease. She had surgery at Shriners Hospital, Spokane, in May. She is much better now.

She could not walk at all before surgery. Now she has special shoes and braces. It is possible that she will be able to walk on her own in the future. Mara is in 3rd grade

Esmeralda Osuna and Reynoldo Felix, both age 3, are vision-impaired. On this day, the Clinic vision specialist assessed the children's vision and taught their mothers about the kinds of foods to give their children so they could feed themselves. This will help the children develop skills to be more independent.
